Glossary: Transaction Frequency
Transaction frequency counts qualifying transactions per address, cluster, or user during a defined period. State which chains and transaction statuses are included.
What is transaction frequency?
Transaction frequency measures how often an address, wallet cluster, or account performs qualifying transactions in a period. Define the unit, chains, event types, and treatment of failed or automated activity; frequency is distinct from volume and retention.
Define the counting rule
Specify the time period, identity unit, chains, transaction types, and status rules. Decide whether failed, reverted, internal, contract-initiated, or multi-action transactions count. A single transaction can contain several protocol events, while a wallet may make several transactions for one product task.
Example
A lending protocol measures the median number of successful supply or withdrawal transactions per active wallet each month. It excludes failed attempts from the success count but reports them separately as friction. The median helps keep a small number of automated or unusually active wallets from dominating the audience summary.
How teams use it
Frequency can help describe engagement, repeat usage, or behavior changes across cohorts and segments. Pair it with active days, retention, transaction success, and revenue. Compare equivalent periods and account for seasonality, campaigns, and chain-specific fees.
Common mistakes
Do not equate high frequency with high value or healthy retention. Avoid mixing event counts with transaction counts, and consider bots, aggregators, smart accounts, and protocol contracts when interpreting wallet activity.

FAQs
How do you calculate transaction frequency?
Count qualifying transactions for each address or cluster over a defined period, then report the unit and whether failed, internal, or contract-generated transactions are included.
Is frequency the same as transaction volume?
No. Frequency counts actions; volume measures the value moved or recorded under a defined metric.
Can bots distort transaction frequency?
Yes. Automated contracts, arbitrage, and scripted wallets can create high activity, so identify the analysis unit and any filtering rules.
