Glossary: Wallet Age

Wallet age estimates the time since an address was first observed on supported chains; it measures address history, not a person's age or app tenure.

What is wallet age?

Wallet age is the elapsed time since an address's earliest observed qualifying activity in the data provider's supported chains. Missing history, chain coverage, and clustering rules affect the estimate; it does not show when a person began using an app.

How to interpret wallet age

An older address may have a longer visible history, but age does not prove that its current controller is experienced or that the address was continuously active. An address can be dormant, controlled by a contract or service, or used by someone other than its original controller. If analysis groups linked addresses, document whether age is measured per address or from the earliest activity in the cluster.

Example

A protocol segments recently active wallets by time since first observed transaction. It compares activation and retention across age bands, while separately checking current activity and protocol usage. This avoids equating a ten-year-old dormant address with a ten-year-long relationship to the product.

Using wallet age

Wallet age can provide context for audience segmentation and cohort analysis. Combine it with recency, transaction frequency, wallet labels, and product behavior. Keep the data timestamp and chain coverage visible when comparing results.

Common mistakes

Do not call wallet age a user's age or tenure with an app. Do not assume the first observed transaction is the address's true creation date. Missing chain history and newly supported networks can shift the observed start date.

FAQs

How is wallet age calculated?

It is commonly measured from the earliest known onchain activity for the address, but providers can differ in chain coverage and what activity qualifies.

Does an older wallet belong to an experienced user?

Not necessarily. Addresses can be dormant, shared, automated, or controlled by services; age is an address history signal, not a verified user attribute.

Can wallet age be calculated for a cluster?

Yes, if the clustering rule is defined. A cluster's earliest observed activity may predate the activity of any one address in it.
