CAC Payback Period Calculator

CAC Payback Period Calculator

Find how many months of gross profit it takes to recover the cost of acquiring a user.

Calculate Your CAC Payback Period

Enter CAC, monthly revenue per user, and gross margin to calculate payback in months.

What is CAC payback period?

CAC payback period is the time needed for a customer’s gross profit to recover the cost of acquiring that customer. It is usually expressed in months. A shorter payback frees acquisition budget sooner, but it only matters if customers remain active long enough to repay the cost.

How to calculate CAC payback

Enter customer acquisition cost (CAC), average monthly revenue per customer, and gross margin. Monthly gross profit per customer = monthly revenue × gross margin as a decimal. CAC payback in months = CAC ÷ monthly gross profit. Include ads, incentives, agency fees, and sales costs in CAC when they are part of acquisition.

A CAC payback example

If CAC is $120 and a customer generates $30 of monthly revenue at a 70% gross margin, monthly gross profit is $21. The payback period is $120 ÷ $21, or about 5.7 months.

How to interpret payback months

Compare payback with retention for the same cohort. A six-month payback is unlikely to work if most acquired customers leave after three months. For a crypto app, use revenue from fees or other actual earnings and compare payback for activated or retained wallets.

What this estimate assumes

The formula assumes monthly revenue and margin remain steady until the acquisition cost is recovered. It does not model changing usage, churn, refunds, delayed activation, or the time value of money. Use cohort revenue when those patterns matter.
