What Is Lifetime Value?
Lifetime value (LTV) is the total revenue a business can expect from a single customer over the entire time they stay active. It’s one of the most important numbers in growth, because it sets the ceiling for how much you can profitably spend to acquire that customer in the first place.
LTV = avg monthly revenue per wallet × wallet lifespan (months) × gross margin
In crypto, the “customer” is a wallet, and revenue usually comes from trading fees, borrow/lend spreads, or protocol take-rate rather than a subscription or purchase price. Wallet LTV tells you how much value an average active wallet generates for your protocol before it goes inactive, which is what your cost per wallet needs to beat.
Lifetime value in crypto vs. web2
Web2 LTV is usually built from subscription revenue or average order value. Crypto LTV is built from onchain fee generation: what a wallet actually pays the protocol in fees, spread, or take-rate, which means it can be measured directly from onchain data instead of estimated from billing records.
LTV vs. cost per wallet
LTV only tells half the story. Compare it to your cost per wallet, what you spend in marketing to acquire one transacting wallet, to see if acquisition is actually profitable. A healthy target is generally an LTV-to-CAC ratio of 3:1 or higher, though the right ratio varies by protocol and payback period.
