What Is a Retention Rate?
Retention rate is the percentage of an original group — customers, users, or wallets — who are still active at the end of a given period. It’s the inverse of churn, and it measures whether a product keeps the people it already won, rather than just adding new ones.
Retention rate = (active wallets at end − new wallets acquired) ÷ active wallets at start × 100
In crypto, retention is measured at the wallet level rather than the account level. Isolating wallets that were active at the start of a period — and excluding newly acquired ones — shows whether a protocol keeps generating repeat onchain activity, or just cycling through one-time farmers.
Retention rate in crypto vs. web2
Web2 retention usually tracks logins or app opens. Crypto retention tracks onchain activity — a wallet transacting again in a later period — which is a stronger signal of genuine usage since it requires gas fees and intent, not just idle engagement.
Retention rate vs. churn rate
Retention and churn are mirror images of the same cohort: retention rate + churn rate = 100%. A 60% retention rate means a 40% churn rate for that same period. Teams typically report whichever number better frames the story — retention for growth updates, churn for risk and health monitoring.
