Glossary: Touchpoint
A touchpoint is a recorded interaction that may precede a conversion, such as a campaign visit or referral. Attribution rules determine which touches qualify for credit.
What is a touchpoint?
A touchpoint is an eligible interaction along a journey, such as a campaign visit, referral, or app event. Define eligible events and identity matching before assigning credit; attribution records a model's rule, not causal proof.
Touchpoints in crypto analytics
A blockchain-based apps journey can span offchain discovery and onchain activity. A user may see a campaign, visit a website, return from a community link, connect a wallet, and later complete a transaction. Analytics can connect those signals only when identifiers and event context are available and the matching rules permit it. A public wallet address alone does not reveal every prior visit.
Example
A user first lands through a partner link, later returns from organic search, and then swaps. The partner visit and search visit are possible touchpoints; the confirmed swap is the conversion event. A first-touch model credits the earliest eligible touchpoint, while a last-touch model credits the latest one.
Using touchpoints responsibly
Define the eligible event types, deduplication rule, identity unit, and attribution window before comparing channels. Preserve source details such as referrer, UTM parameters, referral code, and ad click ID where available. Report missing or unlinked journeys because attribution coverage affects channel totals.
Common mistakes
Do not call every page view a meaningful touchpoint without defining the rule. Do not count the conversion event itself as an earlier acquisition touch. Attribution credit describes a model's allocation, not causal proof.

FAQs
Is a touchpoint the same as a click?
No. A touchpoint is an eligible interaction or exposure in the journey. A click may create a visit, but other tracked interactions can also qualify.
Can a wallet transaction be a touchpoint?
It can be, depending on the analysis. Teams should distinguish acquisition touchpoints from product events and the conversion event itself.
Does a touchpoint prove influence?
No. Attribution records and allocates credit under a rule; it does not establish that the interaction caused the outcome.
