What is Net Promoter Score?
Net Promoter Score (NPS) is a survey measure of how likely customers are to recommend a product. People who answer 9 or 10 are promoters, 7 or 8 are passives, and 0 through 6 are detractors. The score ranges from −100 to +100 and helps you track customer sentiment over time.
How to calculate NPS
Ask customers how likely they are to recommend your product on a 0–10 scale. Count promoters, passives, and detractors, then divide each group by all responses. NPS = percentage of promoters − percentage of detractors. Passives count in the total even though they are not subtracted.
An NPS example
Suppose 100 customers respond: 60 promoters, 25 passives, and 15 detractors. Promoters make up 60% and detractors 15%, so NPS is 45. The score is 45, not 45%.
How to interpret your NPS
A positive NPS means promoters outnumber detractors. Compare the score over time using the same survey question, channel, and timing. Segment responses by customer cohort only when each group has enough answers to be meaningful.
What NPS does not tell you
NPS reflects the surveyed group, not every user. It does not explain why someone chose a rating or show what they do in your product. Pair open-text survey feedback with retention, activation, and wallet activity before deciding what to change.
